01 / THE PERSON BEHIND BACHATA SENSE
Hi, I’m Patrick.
I want you to feel at home on the dance floor. And for your dance to feel like you.
Bachata has been part of my life since 2017. Stage experience, over 100 hours of private training in Barcelona and my training with Korke & Judith shape how I teach. What I want to share: clear basics, attentive connection and the joy of dancing together.
«A smile after a great social matters more to me than a complicated figure.»

MUSIC / MOVEMENT / CONNECTIONAbout Bachata · Music. Movement. Togetherness.+
Hello & welcome, Bachater@s. I’m Patrick, a social dancer from Switzerland. Here is an introduction to bachata – and to what matters to me on the dance floor.
01 / THE ROOTSWhat is bachata?+
Bachata is music and dance rooted in the Dominican Republic. Its Dominican music and dance tradition has been part of UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage since 2019.
Today you will meet different expressions of bachata: rhythmic, playful, soft or energetic. You do not have to fit into one category. For me, clear foundations, musical curiosity and attentive connection belong together.
02 / THE MUSICListen first. Then move.+
Love, longing, joy and heartbreak: bachata tells stories. Explore traditional recordings alongside modern productions, including artists such as Aventura, Romeo Santos and Prince Royce.
My first suggestion: listen to a song before dancing to it. Follow an instrument, a voice or a pause. On the second play, stay in your basic and respond to just one moment you recognise. You do not need to dance every accent.
03 / THE DANCEMany styles. Your own expression.+
Style names can help you find your way. On the social floor, their boundaries often overlap. No style automatically makes you a more considerate dance partner.
Dominicana
Connected to bachata’s Dominican roots: explore rhythm, weight changes and playful footwork. This tradition deserves as much attention as newer developments.
Sensual
Korke & Judith developed Bachata Sensual in Cádiz. Body mechanics, musical interpretation and coordinated movement shape their method. In my teaching, control and comfort come first.
Urbana / Fusion / Moderna
People use these labels in different ways. They often describe contemporary combinations and influences from other dances. Ask what foundations and material a particular class actually covers.
Bachatango & Rueda
Bachatango combines bachata with tango elements. Rueda is a group format with called figures and frequent partner changes. What matters is whether you enjoy the format.
04 / TOGETHERNESSSocial dancing: feeling comfortable together.+
A social dance is a shared moment. You can learn, laugh, make mistakes and need a break. This is the approach I want to share through Bachata Sense.
Ask. Listen. Respect.
Anyone can decline or end a dance without explaining why. Agreeing to dance is not agreeing to every movement or degree of closeness. Briefly share preferences and boundaries.
Adapt to each other
Start simply and find a shared rhythm. Experience also shows in helping both people feel comfortable. Dance roles are not tied to gender.
Advice by invitation
A social is not the place for unsolicited teaching. Give feedback only when both people welcome it.
Make room
Watch the other couples and adapt your movements to the available space. After a collision, stop and check everyone is okay. A crowded floor does not need difficult figures.
Fresh and comfortable
Fresh clothes, clean hands and a break when needed all help. Use fragrance lightly: not everyone enjoys or tolerates strong perfume.
Be present
Give your attention to the music and your partner. Save long conversations for off the floor. Say thank you at the end, without judging the dance or adding pressure.
New to dancing? You do not need to apologise. An attentive basic can feel wonderful.

Over 100 hours of private training
Bachata Sensual · Certified Instructor L1
Bachata Sense is my way of teaching Bachata Sensual: understanding movement, noticing connection and making room for the music. I want you to dance comfortably with different people, with control, care and your own expression.
That is why we start with what supports your dance: weight transfer, timing, balance and clear, comfortable lead & follow. We practise with intention and bring it back to the social floor. A pause can be part of the dance too.

01A confident basic+
Basics that support you.
Start without music. Shift your weight calmly from one foot to the other. Count 1–2–3–Tap, 5–6–7–Tap. Keep your weight on the standing leg during the tap. Start small and clear, then add music.
Fundamentals

Movement starts with awareness.
Stand comfortably. Breathe gently in and out. Notice your ribcage moving without lifting your shoulders. Add small, soft weight changes. Stay within a comfortable range of motion.
Body Intelligence

Less force. More listening.
With a partner: ask what hand connection feels comfortable. Stay in a simple basic and keep the connection light and clear. Afterwards, share what felt good. On your own: practise calm weight changes.

One accent is enough.
Listen to a song first. Choose one instrument or voice. Next time, stay in your basic and respond to just one accent per eight-count. You do not need to dance everything at once.

START NOW
01 / 3–5 min practiceBalance & weight transfer+
Your focus
Notice which leg carries your weight. Clarity starts before the first step.
- Place your feet comfortably under your body and keep your knees relaxed.
- Slowly transfer weight left and right. Keep the movements small and stay balanced.
- Pause after each transfer: which foot could take a small step without having to reorganise your weight first?
Your check
Can you name your supporting leg without looking down? Focus on awareness rather than speed.
02 / 5 min practiceYour basic in eight counts+
Your focus
Connect small steps, weight changes and taps with an even rhythm.
- Count slowly: 1–2–3–4, 5–6–7–8. Start without music.
- Step left, bring right in, step left; lightly tap right on 4 without fully transferring your weight.
- Mirror it back: right, bring left in, right; tap left on 8. Repeat with small steps.
- Then add a slow bachata song. If you lose the rhythm, pause and start again.
Your check
Does your tap stay light so your next step is free? A calm basic is already dancing.
03 / 1 songPause, breathe & be present+
Your focus
Explore expressing the music through simple movement and intentional pauses.
- Dance a solo basic you know well. Keep breathing calmly and relax your shoulders.
- Listen for an accent or a quieter moment. Choose one for a brief pause.
- Stay balanced and keep listening to the pulse. Rejoin intentionally.
- Write down one observation afterwards: when did your dancing feel more relaxed?
Your check
Could you enjoy a pause without immediately needing another pattern?

YOUR PRACTICE PLANFour weeks. A conscious foundation.+
A suggested self-guided plan: two short sessions each week plus a repeat. Set your own pace. Exercises are free to access; this is not a booked course.
Week 1 · Balance & basic
Read the first two fundamentals lessons. Practise twice for five minutes: once without music, once to a calm song. On a third day, repeat only weight transfers.
Notice: Can you stand calmly after a tap?
Week 2 · Body awareness
Use Reset and Body in Sense Lab. Compare a small movement with a slightly larger one without holding your breath. Repeat the more comfortable version.
Notice: What moves deliberately, and where do you hold unnecessary tension?
Week 3 · Connection
Use the connection session solo with pauses or with a partner after agreeing on contact. Ask one specific question about comfort after each round.
Notice: What made your movement clearer without using more force?
Week 4 · Music & personal flow
Use the Music and Flow sessions. Listen first, dance one song with one focus, then write down a small improvement.
Notice: Which decision came from the music rather than habit?
COMMUNITY NOTESQuestions & experiences+
These editorial examples show how to get started. They are not member posts.
EXAMPLE · A PREVIEW OF THE CONVERSATIONWhy do I lose my basic?+
Adding a new movement makes me rush. What can I try?
Something to try
Return to small steps and count one eight-count aloud. Then add just one change. If you rush, return to your basic.
One song. Small steps. One focus.
EXAMPLE · A PREVIEW OF THE CONVERSATIONWhat does comfortable connection feel like?+
Do I need a stronger grip to be understood?
Something to try
Ask what feels comfortable. Start with simple weight transfers and little force. Clear connection also comes from timing and movement through your body.
Ask: Did that feel comfortable and clear?
EXAMPLE · A PREVIEW OF THE CONVERSATIONHow can I hear more than the beat?+
I want to dance musically without learning more figures.
Something to try
Listen to a song without dancing. Notice one pause or recurring accent. On the next play, stay in your basic and respond only to that element.
Fewer movements, more conscious choices.
REFLECT / NEXT STEPYour check-in+
